20th July 2014 - Of Quality and Cuisine....

Thought for the day : "Life is too short to remove USB safely "

A big day in the Sewell Household and a day that Susie has been working towards for a long time..
Tonight she achieved her ambition of the year - to create a full meal only from produce raised and grown at home....

The first of the latest batch of chickens had the chop - and has been ceremoniously sacrificed to the Gods of Gluttony.. Yum !!!
Yes -0 they did really start that size - though of late they have outgrown the Egg Laying Girls and spend much of their time sitting down...  But after the chop and the plucking, and sadly a missed shot of 'Thena covered in feathers after investigating the black bag..., it turned out to be over 5 and a half pounds!!
And doesn't it look good ready for the oven...   But even better after cooking for a while....
Though quite a bit of fat came out - so we may be overfeeding slightly !!!   But the taste was completely different even to free range store bought chicken...
Add to that the produce from the plotment, and a feast fit for a king....
Now most of my family will agree that a Sunday Roast is not complete without a healthy dollop of skirly. Also spelled scurley and possibly other ways as it has only really been a spoken word in my recollection.
A good old scottish dish, originally used as a cheap stuffing for the chicken - but then taken on as a suitable addition to any roast meal, cooked in the pan...  Oats, Onions, Fat and Salt....  yumm

Of course the oats were not home grown on this occasion, but the onions were !!!  So I add the picture with the stuffing last....
Washed down with a nice glass of Chateau 41 ??? Don't mind if I do ...
And so Susie fulfills an ambition of the year. We didn't get the smallholding yet - haven't sold the house, but we have the opportunity to eat from our own produce...  Clever Susie...
