30th November 2023 - Cold walk and Putting bulbs away

Thought for the day :"To me, "drink responsibly" means don't spill it."

Cold but sunny ,
Rob C is with us at the moment and we managed a walk in the frost and took a few photos

Cold spell coming in so the Dahlias got moved into the Polytunnel and the Geraniums went as well

Difficult to see but there are crocus and tulip shoots coming up through the fallen Magnolia leaves..

Dahlias safely away

Getting a little crowded in the driveway
SORNed the Vectra so we can get an MOT and taxing the Volvo for a trip to Bristol airport to get Susie to look after Scarlett

Also took the opportunity to put the tarpaulins up to protect against the incessant rain - we have had three dry days and they will benefit

New covering for the benches ..

Cheers !

29th November 2023 - Changing Tyres - and Road Works

Thought for the day :"Jujitso is the ancient art of folding clothes with people still in them"

Interesting day - Quick walk over Moilin Farm as the road sweeper was clearing the lane and it seemed a good idea to take an alternative route - very muddy down there !

Then to Cardigan for a little shopping in Tesco and ont he way back we had a blow out of the slow puncture tyre ...

Luckily the Vectra still has a spare tyre - though it was flat and had to be pumped ...
And the jack that comes with the car is pretty rubbish
And when I got the wheel brace out it snapped as soon as I tried to undo a wheel nut!!

So Susie starts the walk back to see if we can get tom out from his workign place - and Alex the farmer stops and comes across -
Sadly he does not have any tools that can help but I recall that Will and Joy live at Pwll Glas just down the road so I find him and he is willing to come back to the car with a decent jack and adjustable spanner for wheel brace...

I call Susie and tell her to wait at Karen and Brian - the campsite on the main road and do a touch of adulting in changing the tyre ..

It is a real blow out - the wall having split ...   But the spare holds up...

In other news..., they have finally decided to re surface the lane - which is why the sweeper was clearing it it today...

Scheduled from 12th December to 21st December - will se what disruption we have...

Failed to do much more today ....

Cheers !

28th November 2023 - Sun and Cold and Planting Bulbs

Thought for the day :"The people making yardsticks say they won't be making them any longer"

Weather getting colder - but we started with a bright and sunny day

Took the opportunity to get a barrow of stone down to the steps on the Island - well the bottom step at least - it was under water

Three bags delivered - today was getting to the lower amount of the first bag
Ho Hum - we will get there in the end

But a walk in the sunlight and a look at the fields on the Dog walk

Think I was trying to catch the kites that were in the sky - not sure I succeeded.

Still good views

though these seem rather similar ..

So, sowed the tulips in my favourite lower bed and managed to sow about 30 daffodil bulbs before getting bored...

Once more trailer of hardcore - slowly getting there as well

Susie cleared some of the willow beds, and other areas, and has started on the patio to plant her own tulips,
Also topped all her dahlias so I can put them into the Polytunnel tomorrow, and will have to take the Geraniums in before the frost takes hold properly ..

A fair day in all

Cheers !

27th November 2023 - Getting Colder

Thought for the day :"I had my patience tested and apparently I'm negative."

Bitterly cold today and very windy - brought the flags down as it seemed to be a wise thing to do ..

Dodged the rain and took the dogs for a walk - well wrapped up..

Some interesting fungus again ..

Popped into Newcastle Emlyn to try to pick up some forms to get my driving license renewed but the Post Office was too small - also trying to work out what it will cost me to get a medical form filled in
Looks as though it is more complicated than I thought to get all my categories renewed ..

Work in Progress...

Cheers !

26th November 2023 - Clearing room for Sqeek Pea

Thought for the day :"When someone asks what I did over the weekend, I squint and ask, "Why, what did you hear?" "

Sunday - and we took the opportunity to put wire over the window in Squeek Pea's coop, and open up the brooding box so he/she can us the entire room ..

Another barrow load of stones to the entrance of the Duck pens.

A quick pint in Johnny y Gwas and collected the money from the sale of mead for their Middle Earth day last Monday - and back for roast Lamb for dinner..
And this time we ate Sarah's Lamb - and delicious it was !!

A look around the garden as Susie prunes the roses and trims some of the trees that are overgrowing the paths..

And out for a walk with the dogs and joined up with Rhys and Roisin with Brangwen the Collie
Found som interesting fungi - hand for comparative size..

Cheers !

25th November 2023 - Travelling Day

Thought for the day :"I finally got eight hours of sleep. It took me three days, but whatever."

Back from Londonium .. no photos
Had a great meeting in Mark Mason's Hall for the Royal Order of Scotland
No photos

Cheers !

24th November 2023 - Mark Masons Hall - Royal Order of Scotland

Thought for the day :"When you ask me what I am doing today, and I say "nothing," it doesn't mean I am free. It means I am doing nothing."

Off to London for the Royal Order of Scotland
Interesting - took train and stayed overnight
Seems the legitimate way to do the London trip

Cheers !

23rd November 2023 - On saving the World and of Walking

Thought for the day :"Don’t you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do."

Interesting thought - no real axes to grind but I quite liked some of this ..
Never really trusted Greta - I always wanted to know where the money came from for a 15 year old school activator to reach so far around the world - maybe I am just a cynic (yes that would be correct )

One crisp winter morning in Sweden, a cute little girl named Greta woke up to a perfect world, one where there were no petroleum products ruining the earth. She tossed aside her cotton sheet and wool blanket and stepped out onto a dirt floor covered with willow bark that had been pulverized with rocks. “What’s this?” she asked.
“Pulverized willow bark,” replied her fairy godmother.
“What happened to the carpet?” she asked.
“The carpet was nylon, which is made from butadiene and hydrogen cyanide, both made from petroleum,” came the response.
Greta smiled, acknowledging that adjustments are necessary to save the planet, and moved to the sink to brush her teeth where instead of a toothbrush, she found a willow, mangled on one end to expose wood fibre bristles.
“Your old toothbrush?” noted her godmother, “Also nylon.”
“Where’s the water?” asked Greta.
“Down the road in the canal,” replied her godmother, ‘Just make sure you avoid water with cholera in it”
“Why’s there no running water?” Greta asked, becoming a little peevish.
“Well,” said her godmother, who happened to teach engineering at MIT, “Where do we begin?” There followed a long monologue about how sink valves need elastomer seats and how copper pipes contain copper, which has to be mined and how it’s impossible to make all-electric earth-moving equipment with no gear lubrication or tires and how ore has to be smelted to a make metal, and that’s tough to do with only electricity as a source of heat, and even if you use only electricity, the wires need insulation, which is petroleum-based, and though most of Sweden’s energy is produced in an environmentally friendly way because of hydro and nuclear, if you do a mass and energy balance around the whole system, you still need lots of petroleum products like lubricants and nylon and rubber for tires and asphalt for filling potholes and wax and iPhone plastic and elastic to hold your underwear up while operating a copper smelting furnace and . . .
“What’s for breakfast?” interjected Greta, whose head was hurting.
"Fresh, range-fed chicken eggs,” replied her godmother. “Raw.”
“How so, raw?” inquired Greta.
“Well, . . .” And once again, Greta was told about the need for petroleum products like transformer oil and scores of petroleum products essential for producing metals for frying pans and in the end was educated about how you can’t have a petroleum-free world and then cook eggs. Unless you rip your front fence up and start a fire and carefully cook your egg in an orange peel like you do in Boy Scouts. Not that you can find oranges in Sweden anymore.
“But I want poached eggs like my Aunt Tilda makes,” lamented Greta.

“Tilda died this morning,” the godmother explained. “Bacterial pneumonia.”
“What?!” interjected Greta. “No one dies of bacterial pneumonia! We have penicillin.”
“Not anymore,” explained godmother “The production of penicillin requires chemical extraction using isobutyl acetate, which, if you know your organic chemistry, is petroleum-based. Lots of people are dying, which is problematic because there’s not any easy way of disposing of the bodies since backhoes need hydraulic oil and crematoriums can’t really burn many bodies using as fuel Swedish fences and furniture, which are rapidly disappearing - being used on the black market for roasting eggs and staying warm.”
This represents only a fraction of Greta’s day, a day without microphones to exclaim into and a day without much food, and a day without carbon-fibre boats to sail in, but a day that will save the planet.
Tune in tomorrow when Greta needs a root canal and learns how Novocain is synthesized.

But we had a good day today - though tiring ..
Two loads of hardcore for the hardstanding
One barrow of stones to the paddock...

Getting there...

Some nice photos on the dog walk today ..

In other news ..
It is interesting to know what is an acceptable price list for Booze these days ..

Cheers !

22nd November 2023 - Stones and Hardstanding

Thought for the day :"I drink wine because it's better not allow things to be bottled up"

Early start to get Susie to the Hospital for her scan - which shows that her neck has some damage but seems to be okay - so pains probably due to the fall ..
Also some deterioration in her back - - put it down to old age !!

Back to let the girls out (Ducks and Chickens)  and back to Newcastle Emlyn to pick up medication.
All go here !!!

Managed to do two trips for hardcore and the hole is filling in nicely ...

Also managed to take a couple of barrows of stones down to the Paddock ..

Toby waits patiently as I work on the  hard standing

Start up required re inflating the tyres on the trailer..  It has seen better days but is still serviceable

Some colour on the roadway - lovely little pink flowers in the hedgerows

Stopped at the seat and planted a few daffodils for the spring...
We shall see if they grow

Interesting fungus on the roadway.

Ducks beginning to lay again - two a day again - nothing formt he Chickens yet.

Squeak-Pea is growing and will need to be let out of his small coop soon

Cheers !
