Thought for the day :"I just wonder if James Blunt had lost his edge?"
Rain 10 : Dry 6
The 16th of the month is an important monthly anniversary as it was the 16th July 2020 that we moved into this our main property, and started our latest stage of life.
December and January are our quietest months, the lack of light and shortness of days mean that there is no real feeling that we have much of a wish to actually to much.
Walked the dogs - that is a norm, and dodged the sprinkling of frozen rain, and had a look at the ritual for the Order of Athelstan which I will have to do at the end of the month, and it is pretty cold !
But, the leaves from the hedgerow at the front of the house needed clearing and so I took the broom out.
Should have cleared the leaves from the bush halfway down the terraces but it was too cold and it started raining - even though only a little
On 16th January 1840, John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones were all found guilty of high treason for taking part in the Newport Chartists Riot and sentenced to hanging, drawing and quartering, the last time such a sentence was issued in the UK.
The severity of the sentences shocked many people and protests led to it being commuted to transportation for life. When they received a total pardon in 1856, Jones stayed in Australia as a watchmaker and Williams stayed in Tasmania, where he subsequently made his fortune discovering coal. However, John Frost, who had worked as a school teacher in Tasmania, returned to Britain, where he received a triumphant welcome in Newport and by the time of his death in 1877 the majority the reforms for which the Chartists had campaigned were enshrined in law.
Cheers !
