18th October 2019 - Three Blind mice and the Oxford Martyrs

Thought for the day:"Do you find it suspicious that hurricanes turn up in Alphabetical order ??"

Boris seems to have a deal - whether he can get it through Parliament tomorrow

Give us a song, Boris  !!!

In other news...

Yesterday my picture of the day was 3 blind Mice - the early days

Someone commented "Oxford Martyrs" so I had to look up the derivation of the nursery rhyme - and found this interesting article from Pastor David Riley - called Reverential Ramblings..

I repeat it here for ease of reading...

When Queen Mary ascended the throne of England in 1553 – few people would have known that within five years hundreds of Protestant sympathisers would be burnt at the stake, the queen would become known as “Bloody Mary”, and the nursery rhyme “Three Blind Mice” would be written.

Queen Mary’s father – the famous Henry VIII – had England join the Protestant Reformation in the 1530s. The country would then swing between Catholicism and the nascent Protestantism for over a hundred and fifty years – depending on the loyalties of the regent at the time.

Queen Mary’s devotion lay with the church of Rome and her five years in charge would be spent reversing not only the church reforms of her father, but also her half-brother Edward VI who had become king at the age of nine and was dead six years later.

The highest profile executions that Mary ordered were those she organised in the university town of Oxford. Hugh Latimer, Nicholas Ridley, and Thomas Cranmer were Anglican bishops who were burnt to death outside of Balliol College for their support of England’s Reformation. By the time of her death in 1558 “Bloody Mary” had ordered the executions of almost three hundred men and women for their religious beliefs.

Board Street in Oxford, England – in front of Balliol College. The “X” marks the spot where the three Protestant bishops Latimer, Ridley, and Cranmer were burnt at the stake

So, where does the famous children’s nursery rhyme “Three Blind Mice” fit into this story of the Reformation? Well, Queen Mary had not only earned the nickname “Bloody Mary” for her executions but also “The Famer’s Wife” for her marriage to King Phillip of Spain who owned huge tracts of fertile farmland. The three Anglican bishops who were executed in Oxford were said to be spiritually blind for their support of church reform and their criticisms of the Pope. And their deaths were a result of their actions to stop Mary becoming queen when her Protestant half-brother Edward VI died at the age of fifteen.

Who knew they were describing church history when as kids they sang:

Three blind mice. Three blind mice.

See how they run. See how they run.
They all ran after the farmer’s wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,
As three blind mice?

Wood Carving of the martyrdom

Some speculation suggests that as they were burned and not blinded and so there should be no connection - however - others show that they were "blind" to the truth - I shall leave it to speculation

Cheers!

17th October 2019 - The world today - Trump & Trains

Thought for the day:"Adam's apples... They're the neck's big thing!"

From the sublime to the ridiculous...   when you cannot tell when it is satire - this is apparently real!!!

BBC News says..
"In the letter dated 9 October, and sent after US troops were pulled out of Syria, Mr Trump told Mr Erdogan: "Don't be a tough guy. Don't be a fool!"
Turkish presidential sources told the BBC that the letter was "thoroughly rejected" by Mr Erdogan.
On the day the letter was received, Turkey launched a cross-border offensive against Kurdish-led forces.
"Let's work out a good deal! You don't want to be responsible for slaughtering thousands of people, and I don't want to be responsible for destroying the Turkish economy - and I will," Mr Trump said in the letter.
"History will look upon you favourably if you get this done the right and humane way. It will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don't happen."
In response, Turkish presidential sources said: "President Erdogan received the letter, thoroughly rejected it and put it in the bin."  "

They are still talking about impeachment ....

Meanwhile, in this country Extinction rebellion are demonstrating again - this time disrupting the Tube system which seems a little off piste in their actions. after all, one would have thought hat public transport, and especially electric public transport would be supported in the face of the alternative - getting more cars on the road. Also does not seem to be gaining much public sympathy in this way.. Apparently one demonstrator decided to sit on top of a train and the public pulled him off onto the platform.  So prompting a bit more violence than expected.

(Action at 55 secs)

Well - hope they are running properly on Monday when I go to London...

A day off in a busy week...  Though a cold is bubbling under the surface...
Best stay in the warm I think ...

Cheers !

16th October 2019 - Brain the Size of a Planet - RIP

Thought for the day :"Turn an ordinary sofa into a sofa bed – just forget her birthday"

Daily Trumpton...

Actor and inspiration for Radiohead’s Paranoid Android hit, Stephen Moore, has died aged 81. The star was best known for his voice acting work on The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, where he played Marvin, the Paranoid Android. While his cause of death is unknown, Moore’s sad passing was confirmed by Hitchhikers Guide producer, Dirk Maggs. Sharing photos of Moore to Twitter yesterday, the producer wrote: ‘Our dear friend Stephen Moore has died. ‘A fine actor, a lovely man and the original and most iconic voice of Marvin The Paranoid Android.’

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - MARCH 12: English actor Stephen Moore at the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy 30th anniversary event, on March 12, 2008 in London. Moore, who was born in Brixton, first voiced the role of the ‘manically depressed’ robot Marvin with ‘a brain the size of a planet’ in 1978 during the second episode of the original radio series and TV spin-off.

He also played a number of minor characters including Gag Halfrunt, The Ruler of the Universe, the whale and Frankie Mouse. In 2018 he retired from the role and Jim Broadbent took over for the adaptation of And Another Thing. It was Moore’s character that inspired the title of Radiohead’s 1997 hit Paranoid Android with lead singer Thom Yorke saying of the title: ‘That’s how people would like me to be.’

And from Athelstan...
Interesting little post about Bridgnorth and a connection with King Alfred and his daughter

and I have no idea how I could have missed this - worth every second to watch !!!

Wednesday - All Grown up !!!

Cheers !!!

15th October 2019 - Musings on Travel requirements

Thought for the day:"I seem to be happier after I replaced my morning coffee with orange juice… Doctor says it is the Vitamin C and the natural sugars – I think it is the Vodka!"

Responded at Prince of Wales Lodge in Llanelli last night - actually found myself playing the Organ as well !! Was a quiet but good evening - but it is a busy week. Aberaeron this evening for Royal & Select Masters ...

Looked at my trip to East Anglia later next month and the hotels all seem very pricey - so it looks as though I will not be able to share transport on this occasion. It is gong to be cheaper to drive up and back in the Bothy rather than take a hotel at ove3 £100 for a night. It is an awkward meeting as well as it is an evening meeting so having to think about a long drive there and hotel afterwards rather than before.
I think it will have to be the Bothy!

In other news....

I am not a great one for the Royals - can rarely remember which they are - but saw the Queen in Parliament yesterday for her 65th Queen's speech and thought that she is doing well...   Found this photo which I though was worth keeping here...

I think that they are ageing well - though of course he is very frail and does not go on royal visits any more ...

It was also the funeral of a serving Policeman and this rather touching photo was in the news..  Shows a bit of care and thought on someone's part - helps if you are standing in the rain for along time ...

So - we are still no nearer knowing what will be happening in Brexit .. but rules about smoking in cars are having as effect ....

Made me chuckle....

Having a Welsh theme at the moment ...

Cheers !!!

14th October 2019 - Staying Young

Thought for the day :"I’ve recently started a company manufacturing over-sized sinks... Does anyone on here mind if I give it a massive plug?"

New week - new profiles ....

In humour news for Millenials

In Masonic news.....

Never too old !!!

Greetings Brethren,
On Wednesday last I attended a wonderful meeting in Staffordshire when the ME was Installed at the age of 99 years and 363 days (in other words 2 days short of his 100th birthday)
As it was his third time in the Chair it was the ‘short’ ceremony. However, not only did he carry out all the ritual, he did get somewhat grumpy when the Installing Master tried to help him by attending to the floor element with the SW during the long closing in the third. He stopped him and then proceeded to meet the SW in the centre of the Lodge and return to his place unaided.
He pointed out that during his years in the Craft he has served 8 PGMs and was a little disappointed that only 4 of them were in attendance!
As the current PGM pointed out, we witnessed history in the making and none of those present were likely to see anything similar again.
I can only agree.
All best
Allan Smith

Prince of Wales Craft Lodge this evening and I Shall be responding for the visitors..

Best have a little look at some history I suppose...

Cheers !!!

13th October 2019 - Welshisms, Templars and Typecasting

Thought for the day :"My Sicilian uncle combines his hobbies of taxidermy and bomb making – he will make you an otter you cannot defuse"

13 October 1307 – Hundreds of Knights Templar in France are arrested at dawn by King Phillip the Fair, and later confess under torture to heresy. If I remember correctly - it was a Friday - thus one derivation of Friday 13th being unlucky ....

In other news, I saw this Trumpton..

Magick anyone ??

On other thoughts of humour ....
had to chuckle as I typed...

Typing Symphony

Wales were playing Rugby early this morning in Tokio. Don't worry - I didn't watch it or get up or anything ridiculous like that - but I saw this Welsh Terminator....

Only the welsh will really understand - but I had to chuckle...

and so - Cheers ! Have a Happy Sunday ...
