31st December 2024 - End of Year celebrations - Flu

Thought for the day :"Apparently penguins don't fly because they are too small to reach the pedals"

Wet

Despite the weather, Bunnie and Scarlett decided that they would walk up to the shop in Brynhoffnant on the basis that it was only 3 miles away and would only take an hour.
It started raining so I went an picked her up in the Landie, despite there being no windscreen wipers.

So the rest of the day has been a pyjama day again - Susie still in bed. Cat decided that it would be better not to come up for the New Year but rather come in a couple of weeks time when she has some leave.

So it is time for another Harry Potter film (number 5) and probably some tagliatelle for dinner.

No photos so thought I would share this

Cheers

30th December 2024 - Winter Chickens

Thought for the day :"Christmas is always a Claus for celebration"

Wet

Susie is bed - Flu has really gone onto her chest.
Had a late (early) evening with Rob chewing the fat but he has to head off today for his mayoral duties.

Bunnie and Scarlett decided to stay with us for a couple of days.

Not much else happens today - watching Harry Potter (4)

Had one chicken awaiting disposal, but it had a reprieve and went back into the main cage again.

Clive and the rest are settling down...

Have a picture of a Chicken

And the house in Winter

Had a visit from Tom Foote and Lindsay who were visiting in the area and staying in Aberaeron.

Thought for the day :"I think that my Christmas tree is ill. I think it has Tinselitus"

Wet

Walk in the woods - cleared the obstruction to the path with the chain saw...
Enjoyed the walk

Rob C arrived this afternoon and a pleasant evening and dinner ...

Evening with the family - with the log burner

Cheers !

28th December 2024 - Christmas Hiatus

Thought for the day :" Sheep say 'Fleece Navidad' rather than 'Merry Christmas'"

Wet

Not feeling good but Susie is worse!
Got up my gumption and after staying in bed until almost 1pm managed to do a full walk with the dogs. They were missing their walks - it had been a good few days.

Tree still down on the Halwen Hall Donkey Trail though there is a walk around ...

Posted on the Rhydlewis Site

Watching the Godfather again this evening on ITV, and get to the bit with the Horse's head in the bed and realise that they have sanitised the film - they have cut out the under age girl being brought by her mother to the Film Producer, and the discussion with the Godfather that it was "infamita" and thus they decided to take the thing that he was most fond of - and nearest and dearest to him, and show how the Godfather can get to him ...
I think that they lost something in the decision - it was a key part of the Godfather's makeup ..
In the same way that he was against drugs ...

Oh well

Cheers !

27th December 2024 - Cold and Lurgies

Thought for the day :" Learning German with Duolingo. Apparently the German word for bra is Stoppemfrumfloppen."

Misty and foggy but rain in the air - but generally dry

Slow day as we are making the most of feeling miserable and ill,
Susie stayed in bed until after lunch and I took the afternoon shift.

Chickens and ducks and peacocks all doing well

No new photos so have a few of Toby as a Reindeer!...

Cheers !

26th December 2024 - Boxing Day and Home again

Thought for the day :"Reindeer apparently use Horn - Aments to decorate their antlers"

Wet but brightening up

And Christmas at Narberth is ended and we head back to Ffynnon Wen - care of Nancy giving us a lift again.

Dogs are relieved to be back and so were the chickens and ducks as they were released and made a break for freedom.

Susie full of cold, and I think I am going down with it as well. Stu was very poorly but still managed the culinary duties, on lemsip and honey and lemon.

Quiet day ..

Fire Breathing Dragon - gift from Bunnie

And Flying Pigs - with propellors

Meanwhile - Nancy and the Keens are on the beach

Cheers !

25th December 2024 - Family Christmas Day at Narberth

Thought for the day :"After the wise men offered up their gifts of gold and frankincense.. they said 'Wait, there's myrrh...'"

Wet

So, what started out yesterday as a well planned trip - the Vectra was filled up, packed, dogs in and everything ready to go and we got as far as Tome & Jay's before the engine started making a frightful noise!
At first we thought it may be a flat tyre but no it was definitely coming form the engine.
Susie thought it may be lack of oil and the dip stick suggested that she could be right.

Luckily as the bonnet was up - Sally was driving by and stopped to see what the problem was and angel that she is she took me home to collect a can of oil and took me back..
Sadly - no luck other than clouds of oily smoke - may have overfilled can't really tell.

Drove the Vectra back limping and coasting down the hill - Sally thought we were going very fast for a broken down car - took the bend as fast as I thought it was safe to do and got half way up the lane before the transmission failed completely to move the car - step in Susie pushing and then with Sally and we got to the flat and was able to park up..

Thanking sally she went on her way and we were left with Nancy kindly coming up from Narberth and picking us up !!!

A lovely Christmas eve and Day though toby was petrified of the laminate flooring and 'Thena is in prime ravenous mood at the moment. One second out of sight and Susie caught her up in one the bedrooms raiding the chocolate money and a Cadbury's Orange !!  The rest of the festivities found me on 'THena watch a lot of the time.
Toby wouldn't settle the first night and Susie ended up on the couch downstairs, one of the few places he felt safe.

Second night he was better and slept on the bed with us - don't normally allow but was worth it to have a few hours sleep.

So - Christmas day it was and it was after 5pm when we finished opening the presents.
Had a make yourself a piggy bank.
Bunnie and Scarlett  got me a fire breathing dragon light and some flying piggies

Cooker worked in the gazebo and dinner was lovely

Cheers

24th December 2024 - Local History

Thought for the day :"Just bought a Humpty Dumpty toy from Aldi, it’s brilliant. It comes with…. Aldi Kings horses… and…. Aldi Kings men."

Dry and relatively warm

Walked the dogs this morning and met up with Karen from South View, with her two dogs, including a Dachsund called Fred who did not enjoy the mud and water at all.
Found her on the liet path where she was looking for the place where there used to be an old abandoned car when she was growing up as a child. She couldn't be sure where it was  , but thought it was ear to where the path is completely overgrown - so it looks a the old car drove off the lane...

In other stories, she confirms that the gate opposite our drive was the old footpath and short cut from her house to the village, with the kissing gate at the top of the field and coming out by Lianne and Nathan's bungalow. As I recall the kissing gate is still there as I had to close it up to stop 'Thena getting into the field when the sheep were there.

Apparently the field was the favourite sledging field in the snow.

Walked up to Halwen Hall, which used to be used as the Doctor's surgery in the past - with all the chairs for the waiting room in the area which is now the barn.

She recalls the old shop that used to sell food and wellie boots, and also acted as the Post Office. Apparently the window was filled with big bottle of sweets.
It seems there was a tragedy there when it was being run by Andy, who was apparently a lovely man, when a five year old boy got lost and was found dead in the open drain at the back of the shop. Apparently the mother always blamed Andy for having the open drain, and in the end he took his own life.

This was before the shop was taken over by Heather and acted as a Police Office as related before when she was one of the first volunteers who I trained back in the day when we were opening police stations in Dyfed Powys Police.

There was also a petrol station half way up to the village school. Will have to check the location,

Council have put new bollards at the fallen road and apparently there is so much damage all over the county that it is very unlikely that they will repair - and the road could be closed for months if not longer. That will be an inconvenience for everyone further up the lane and for our deliveries.

Getting ready to head off to Nancy's for Christmas
Cheers !

23rd December 2024 - Cookers

Thought for the day :"When I was young I was poor, but after years of effort I am no longer young"

Wet

A day to ourselves..
Rushed to Nancy's to get the cooker working with Mark and Wendy who went on to have a shopping tour of Narberth.  Cooker all sorted with a little buit of a leak - but nothing to worry about - apparently !

Bunnie and Scarlett and Filipos heading to Nancy's so crossed on the road
Tired Tesco and found I was in a half hour traffic jam to find out that there was no parking place and went to B & M in stead and spent 10 minutes finding a parking space to cross the road back to Tesco ..
All to find that they did not have any bournville cocoa powder for the chocolate cake after all !

Off to Ck's - nothing there either  but half the day gone already ..

Brynhoffant - and find the powder  - job done
And a bottle of Harvey's Bristol Cream for luck !

No Photos today   as not really been out

So

Cheers !

22nd December 2024 - Christmas messages

Windy - but dry so far

Cleaned the Ducks and Chickens first thing while taking down the flags. Another Storm warning for today.

Evening now and it appears to be lessening ..   so fingers crossed.

Susie iced the cake with Scarlett

Decorations up and the garden is surviving..

Chopped extra wood for the yurt - apparently it warms up very well

Christmas greetings from Elfed Welshbloke as usual

Cheers

21st December 2024 - Happy Solstice

Thought for the day :"I am fully aware how annoying I can be - but that is your problem not mine "

Wet - didn't go out much...

Family Day with Scarlett, Filipos and Bunnie with us ....
Put the tree up and everything

This Bullfinch hit the window so hard that it left some feathers on the glass.
Half an hour in a cardboard box and it was well enough to fly off..
Fingers Crossed it is alright...

No other photos today ...

Cheers !
