23rd March 2022 - Building a Yurt - Floor down

Thought for the day :"If Lawyers are disbarred and Clergy defrocked, then Tennis linemen are defaulted"

Progress - just over half the floorboards completed today..   Main structure finished and membrane cover put in place..  Will need two more boards we think tomorrow due to the over-hangs and having to cut the circle...

Short video of Jim and the Dogs on the Platform

And another day is done .....

Cheers !

22nd March 2022 - Yurt Platform and Water Courses

Thought for the day :"If Lawyers are disbarred and Clergy defrocked, then Confused people are demystified"

Another bright day ... Jimmy was with me so we had a chance to get on with the Yurt platform, and we are moving forward with good progress...

Cross pieces mainly in place - tomorrow will be to add the last two cross beams and then put the membrane down and add the flooring... The Drip ring cannot be added until we have a date for the installation as it would cause water to pool on the flooring - though I have tarpaulins so it should not actually be a problem . But we will cut it and then worry about putting it in place when the Yurt arrives...
Watched the video again today so have a good idea of what is required...

Meanwhile Susie has been attacking the plunge pool and stream to the Island Glade... and it looks as though Victor had done some work on the stream area as there are stones and a possible path for the waterway - certainly enough to put a new set down along the water course...

It is amazing to think that almost two years into our adventure we are still finding new areas to explore on this land ..

Cheers - Going to bed tired but happy ...

21st March 2022 - Fairy Town

Thought for the day :"If Lawyers are disbarred and Clergy defrocked, then Students are detested"

Jimmy was delayed so work on other sections of the Homestead continued today.
Finished putting the additional bolts into the platform to secure it.
Took some more barbed wire down allowing access from the plunge pool to the new Glade on the Island. Need to investigate more tomorrow but it looks as though the stream has walls and rocks down the sides into the wilderness and may well have been landscaped. There is a lovely fallen tree acting as a natural arch for the waterflow.
5 more barrows of chippings onto the pathway - my Five a Day!

Popped to the Post Office to post the patches for the CMVQ level 4 - "I Ffynnon Went" to the recipients.

Went searching for a large harness for 'thena to replace the one that got lost on a walk but could n't find one that I liked the look of ..

Susie decided that it was Spring enough to put the Fairy Houses in fairy Town - so with a liberal dose of WD 40, they ended up in the Garden - The Peacock also went out.

And so another day ends ...

Cheers !

20th March 2022 - Clearing the Island and Flowers Blooming

Thought for the day :"If Lawyers are disbarred and Clergy defrocked, then Organ donors are delivered"

Another lovely sunny day and a determination to get another 5 - a - day barrows of grit down to the lower quarter. Took the opportunity of finishing off the path around the Yurt and as Susie had introduced me to the "Island" which I had never rally looked at - about 1/3 acre of additional land between the established land area and the river, I decided to have a look at clearing my way into it ...

So, primarily, it was a case that some time in the past it had been a decision to run a straight line of barbed wire across the "island" and area that obviously spends a certain amount of time in any year under water but which at the moment seem pretty clear.. and that this wire could be moved and the area opened out...

So I did it .. I cleared the undergrowth and the dead branches and cut the wire into manageable lengths and then re-located it along the river bank - thus giving us access to the area which proved fairly dry under foot.   It seems we have a couple of glades that could well be used for camping if we ensure that the nettle and bramble and balsam cannot take root at the beginning of the year ...  It looks as though it could be managed with a weekly strimming and give us  a fairly large area that we were unaware of ...

So - as we start there is barbed wire and a lot of debris

And Later pictures..

A fairly good area...

And On the way back - the Primulas are all planted on the fallen tree and the Yurt area is now paved...

And the Spring is beginning to flower - I love this time of year when it all starts flowering...

And Susie was out in the garden today as well

another day
Sadly broke the steering mechanism on the Wolf Garten mower today - that will be another repair job !

Cheers !

19th March 2022 - Planters, Pathways, and Camping Plots

Thought for the day :"If Lawyers are disbarred and Clergy defrocked, then Naturists are denuded"

What a glorious day - it was actually warm enough to be in shorts and vest to work and not just because I was working hard...

Susie has cleared the bank by the Veranda - at least of the nettles and brambles - the decision as to what to do about the crab grass is for another day.  Meanwhile my task for the day was to build a planter for the Primulas we bought yesterday - as they were wilting a little..  and the location was the fallen tree trunk that Susie has been clearing over the last week or so...

And the chosen wood was of course a pallet! and so we began. Sadly my phone is desperately out of space and storage - probably due to the number of vids and photos on there, and failed to take many of the photos I was taking today ... But we managed to get some .. a before and after at least ...

And so we have the finished planter...

My other task of the day was to cut the tops off the uprights for the Yurt structure with the reciprocating saw - which took a while but working in the end. Also to finish putting all the Timber Bolts in place - we had put one in each and so this was putting the second bolt in for security.

After finishing those sections - and 5 barrows of chippings for the pathway we decided to explore..
Susie has already surveyed out the Island but I had never been onto the land that is along the river - behind a barbed wire fence - but that is to keep the cows out - our land actually extends for quite a way.
It turns out that there is a substantial area on the island - and though it is very wet in the winter with a likelihood of flooding - in the summer it could be very dry and flat and provide a reasonable camping area if I get the strimmer out early and keep the nettles and balsam at bay.

No photos today - have to free up a load of space on the phone before it will work again - but watch this space...

In other news - Ukraine continues - but there was an interesting picture when the Russian cosmonauts arrived at the International Space Station wearing yellow and blue suits - the Ukrainian colours...

Cheers !   First hints of spring..

18th March 2022 - Covid again .. and Storm damage

Thought for the day :"If Lawyers are disbarred and Clergy defrocked, then Celibate people are delayed"

A sad night for me - I had been looking forward to my first live "gig" in ages and a chance to be with some of my LARP friends, for playing in the Castle at St Briavel's for the Black Company.

But day by day the increase in Covid cases has been incessant. New variants BA2 and the mixed variant of Deltacron is putting more and more cases forward - more hospital cases and of course we have lost the news as Ukraine is taking all the headlines.

England has removed all safety restrictions - we still have masks in shops here but the remainder of the country do not have any requirement for being careful. Most, it seems, are now accepting that they will get the "lurgie" and will have to live with it - and they may be right. However, my next stage of tests for my breathing problems is not due until May and it must be said that it is difficult to think that catching the virus would just be the "light touch" that many are getting.

My social feed is filled with people who are getting ill...  Many after one or two previous illnesses. Most however being those who, like me, have managed to remain resistant for the last two years - and now have fallen.  It is a worrying time.

And so this afternoon I decided to cancel my hire car for next week at the Castle.
That means I am not going.
It saddens me as I know that the organiser has had a series of disasters with regard to the event which he has worked so hard to get together - mainly as a personal celebration - then extended to the Mercenaries of Curious Pastimes, primarily the Black Company, and now a Sanctioned CP event ..

My good friend Devil Stick Peat was to be the main entertainment. Worryingly, his wife has Covid at the moment! I was to be the support entertainment as Bard and was looking forward to setting up a full speaker and mike set ....  as well as my normal Bardic / Boozie self.

It is a sad decision but one that I am confident is the right one for the moment - I could not forgive myself if I went off to the Castle for a weekend with 75 friends and came home with Covid to upset our lifestyle at the moment ...

In other news....

It was a day off from the Yurt development today - I took a rest from the main work ..

It was a glorious sunny day though so the Dogs and I went for a long walk, while Susie planted some new seeds in the Greenhouse and cleared more of the top terrace of brambles, and grass.

We also took a trip to Newcastle Emlyn and picked up my new polo shirts - Vollsanger Green !!

Mike the Biz had to recreate the logo and it is wonderful...  I am so glad to support a local business like this.. Mike The Biz

Back to the Homestead...  it was a day to complete the Storm Damage on the party Chair that sits on the lawn. It has been renovated with pallet wood and today received a coat of black paint to preserve. It can go back into its place tomorrow..

Toby Inspects the work

And in other news - the Yurt building today involved the delivery of the remainder of the wood that is required for completing the platform.. Wood prices have increased so much over the last year that we are well over our original budget - the latest load is over £700  for the support pieces and flooring...
But it will certainly be a platform that will last longer than us !!

In other news - Border Changes in European Continent ....  Useful historical record

And with that we will call it a day

Cheers !

17th March 2022 - Yurt Build - day 3

Thought for the day :"If Lawyers are disbarred and Clergy defrocked, then Horses put out to stud are desired"

Another full day at the Yurt Site.
Started with a trip to the Wood Store and brought back 20 6"x2" x 2.4mtr beams (see what I did there? Mixed the imperial and decimal measures - I must drive them berserk at the store where they are in mm all the time!)

With Jimmy's assistance we managed to get all the main support beams in place and properly level - and proved the drop .. My next job is to level the uprights to the height of the beams and add the additional bolts into the beams to make them full secure...  £220 for the wood !!  It is so expensive at the moment.
A year ago I am sure that we would have been on budget but there is no way at the moment - though prices will probably increase again. However, it has made the whole project a lot more expensive than we were expecting..

Having looked at it the other way around of course - should we decide to put it out for AirBnB, Glamping Yurts are charging over £500 a week - so the costs could be recovered quite quickly if we wished. No decision there yet...

But here is today's record...

Meanwhile - Happy St Patrick's Day

Cheers !
