21 January 2022 - Playing with Fire - Towards a Tavern

Thought for the day :"My mate Simon has moved away to Ho Chi Minh City... That's Si gone..."

Playing catch up as we have had guests and too much has been happening

Played with Fire today - now with the baked bean tin that can act as an additional reservoir rather than treacle tins which are a little too shallow...

Had fun walking the dogs and such like ..

Cheers !

20th January 2022 - Cat's Birthday and a bit of Brexit explanation

Thought for the day :"Never going to Yorkshire again. Asked where I could find towels and they sent me to a bird sanctuary!"

Cat with us and so we celebrated her birthday earlier in the week

Author unattributed, sadly:

"BREXIT EXPLAINED.......
David Cameron made a promise he didn't think he'd have to keep to have a referendum he didn't think he would lose. Boris Johnson decided to back the side he didn't believe in because he didn't think it would win. Then Gove, who said he wouldn't run, did, and Boris who said he would run, said he wouldn't, and Theresa May who didn't vote for Brexit got the job of making it happen. She called the election she said she wouldn't and lost the majority David Cameron hadn't expected to win in the first place. She triggered Article 50 when we didn't need to and said we would talk about trade at the same time as the divorce deal and the EU said they wouldn't so we didn't. People thought she wouldn't get the divorce settled but she did, but only by agreeing to separate arrangements for Northern Ireland when she had promised the DUP she wouldn't. Then the Cabinet agreed a deal but they hadn't, and David Davis who was Brexit Secretary but wasn't said it wasn't what people had voted for and he couldn't support what he had just supported and left. Boris Johnson who hadn't left then wished that he had and did, but it was a bit late for that. Dominic Raab become the new Brexit secretary. People thought Theresa May wouldn't get a withdrawal agreement negotiated, but once she had they wished that she hadn't, because hardly anybody liked it whether they wanted to leave or not. Jacob Rees-Mogg kept threatening a vote of no confidence in her but not enough people were confident enough people would not have confidence in her to confidently call a no confidence vote. Dominic Raab said he hadn't really been Brexit Secretary either and resigned, and somebody else took the job but it probably isn't worth remembering who they are as they're not really doing the job either as Olly Robbins is. Then she said she would call a vote and didn't, that she wouldn't release some legal advice but had to, that she would get some concessions but didn't, and got cross that Juncker was calling her nebulous when he wasn't but probably should have been. At some point Jacob Rees Mogg and others called a vote of no confidence in her, which she won by promising to leave, so she can stay. But they said she had really lost it and should go, at the same time as saying that people who voted Leave knew what they were voting for which they couldn't possibly have because we still don't know now, and that we should leave the vote to Leave vote alone but have no confidence in the no confidence vote which won by more. The government also argued in court against us being able to say we didn't want to leave after all but it turned out we could. She named a date for the vote on her agreement which nobody expected to pass, while pretending that no deal which nobody wants is still possible (even though we know we can just say we are not leaving), and that we can't have a second referendum because having a democratic vote is undemocratic. And of course as expected she loses. Some people are talking about a managed no-deal which is not a deal but is not no-deal either.
Thank goodness for strong and stable government."

19th January 2022 - Flame Lights and Police Women

Thought for the day :"I was raised as an only child. My siblings were not happy."

Landrover still charging today - must be a slow charger - but up to 98% when I switched off tonight.

Popped up to Beulah for some corn and growers pellets and 5 pallets so I am back in business again for the Pizza Patio and Barbecue Ballustrade.

Cleared a couple of bags of brambles that Susie has been clearing - and all the cuttings form the Climbing Rose which she has cut back.

Found a treacle tin and decided to use it as a reservoir for the toilet roll flame lamps - seemed to work well and was smouldering 3 hours later - but had to go out to Cardigan so cannot tll when it actually stopped flaming. Will have to experiment again tomorrow.

But this was the plan today...

Seem to have lost the original video - can't find it on the phone  - oh well

In other news.. saw this article from Llanelli - 1919 on Police Women

**An article which shows how differently things were viewed 100 years ago. It's dated the 11th July 1919.

No Women Police.
CARMARTHENSHIRE STANDING JOINT COMMITTEE AGAINST FEMALE POLICE. At a meeting of the Carmarthenshire Standing Joint Committee at Carmarthen on Tuesday, Mr. F. R. Nevill, Llanelly, presiding. The question of the employment of policewomen was considered. The Chief Constable (Mr. W. Picton Philipps). in a report on the matter, stated that as local conditions had a bearing on the question, he presumed, if it were decided to make the experiment, that the first appointed policewoman would be stationed at Llanelly. where the greater number of offences by women and children were committed. Personally he was of opinion that the youth of Llanelly were not quite tile type who would be overawed by a policewoman. They came from a good fighting stock, as in the field of sport and actual warfare the men of Llanelly had well demonstrated, and he doubted whether a woman in police uniform would inspire fear, if even respect, in the minds of these juveniles, well up to the average in precocity, whilst recognising that it was principally the power represented by the uniform and not the person in it that commanded respect, he did not think that it would take these youngsters long to learn that a policewoman was not vested with the same legal power as a regular constable.

Was it probable that evidence would be more satisfactorily elicited by a policewoman than a policeman? Any admissive statement would in any event have to be respected in a public court, a greater ordeal than having to give the information privately to a constable.
He was dubious also whether women would not prefer to state the facts to a married constable than to an unmarried policewoman. The possible suggestion that the painful position of a female delinquent entitled her to what might be thought to be the more considerate performance of an unpleasant duty by a, member of the gentler sex might be met by the observation that it was not above question that women had more sympathy towards each other than a man had for a woman in trouble.
Referring to the proved usefulness of policewomen for certain purposes in the vicinity of camps, the Chief Constable stated that the morality of Llanelly reached a plane that did not tolerate the unfortunate class known as night-walkers, and such a "rani avis" at Llanelly would attract the immediate attention and close supervision of every constable in the locality. He had no doubt she would find the attention of a policewoman alone too embarrassing.
Summing up, the Chief Constable stated that as far as Carmarthenhire was concerned, the advantages were not sufficiently apparent to demand the appointment of a police woman. nor did there appear to be a pre-dominating reason why they should be preferred to the ordinary constable in any branch of police work. At the same time he thought they would constitute very useful auxiliaries in the event of inability to secure male recruits. the number now applying being less than it had been during the 36 years he had been connected with the force, and the quality with rare exceptions considerably inferior. Replying to questions, the Chief Constable said women police would not be vested with the legal powers vested in men, and in many respects they would be inferior to men constables. Mr. Thomas Jones (Llanelly) said if women were supposed to do the work of male police at night, they would have to go about in couples. Aid. John Lewis (Meiros Hall) - Very likely they will be in couples (laughter).
The Chief Constable said the women police would be employed in connection with women and children. Colonel Lloyd Harries (Llwyndewi) thought the employment of women police too dangerous an experiment, to embark upon. Aldr. Wm. Thomas (Whitland) said he understood that women police bad been a. great success in Swansea. The. committee, however, decided not to employ women police. David Davies (Rhyblid) said there were a few ex-soldiers in the county wishful to join the police force, but they were over the age limit for joining. The committee should assist, such men if possible by raising the age limit. The Chief Constable said that as a rule he was able to get men under 25 years of age. He preferred to get them at about 21 years. Men must serve 25 years for a pen- SIC)]). On the motion of Mr. David Davies, seconded by Ald. H. E. B. Richards (Carmarthen). it was decided that special consideration should he given to ex-service men wishing to join the police force, if they were generally fit. The Chief Constable said he would give preference to ex-service men, all thing3 being equal. The Chief Constable reported that the Carmarthenshire police representative board in connection with conditions of service and general welfare of the force. other than question of discipline, had been elected and consisted of the following members of the force:—Inspector Nicholas (Llanelly). Jones (Llandilo). Williams (Carmarthen), Sergts. Britten (Ammanford). Davies (St. Clears), Rees (Llanelly), and Constables David Davies (Llanstephan). D. H. Edwards (Ammanford), Evan Davies (Llanelly). J. Maclaren (Tumble), W. J. Thomas (Llandilo), and J. A. Owen (Carmarthen).
(P.s. - Don't shoot the messenger).

18th January 2022 - Another day ... Starting on the Workshop

Thought for the day :"Someone broke into my house and stole 20% of my couch. Ouch!"

General update...
As the pallets are not with us - it was time to start work upon the workshop.
It is one of the jobs that I have been putting off since moving everything out of the Tavern.
But it was time to start in one corner and start getting some shelving up - a work top and start sorting the screws, nails and the hoards of "bits" that form my collection.
A time to thing about sorting the tools into manageable and accessible locations - and if possible keep it logical so that I can find "things" when I want them.
Like the Tavern - it is a case of getting worse before getting better ...

But these are the "before" pictures... we have to start somewhere ..

Started the day going to Newcastle Emlyn to the Computer shop - where a nice lad called Stuart was able to take my tablet apart and put it back together in a working fashion. A well spent £25 as far as I was concerned as it was ready mid afternoon and in fully working fashion.

Battery Charger arrived - in fact two arrived !
Seems that when they cleared the payment on the Tesco Credit Card for one - they cleared both so two orders went through. I shall see how the returns policy with Hermes works tomorrow on the way to Cardigan (Susie has Physio). Seems to be a fairly simple method of return..

Battery charger set up in the Landrover and seems to be quite a slow charger - but it is an "intelligent" one and cannot over charge - so left it on for most of the day. Now quite fully charged yet so will pop it on again tomorrow. However - the Landy started and was running fine - so looks as though we are going to be okay.

Had a visit from the Sweetmans, David an Jeanette. Just a social visit for a cup of tea and a quick tour of progress. Nice to have visitors. But means that after walking the dogs and collecting the tablet - the day had really gone. Just time for an hour practise on the guitar, dinner and a game of Cribbage.
Damn - life is hard!

Also spent an hour on the phone to Barclays bank to try to get the conclave debit card renewed. In classic Bank system I needed the card to get access to the latest statements and could not pass the security questions as they wanted to know details of transaction in the last 30 days.
Tomorrow I have to go to the bank in Cardigan with ID and get them to change the address and give me the last statements so I can apply to get the card sent to me - so I can hand over the account!!! It is a nightmare again!!.  At least with this one if we can get the card renewed then the on line banking will make things easier. I think!

So a puppy Piccie
Cheers !

17th January 2022 - Windscreens and Masks!

Thought for the day :"I asked Tina Turner for her secret to cooking the perfect turkey. She said it’s simply the baste."

Monday.. and the Qashqai was booked in for a new windscreen to allow us to sell to the Main dealer JJ Motors. Sadly had to take it to Swansea for the 2 hour installation of the screen and 20 minutes to re-calibrate the sensors. Cost £90 for the excess on the insurance. Still better than the £115 that Admiral would have been.

Took the opportunity of walking around the industrial estate and visiting various shops.
Stagger in ASDA to find that there were 23 people without masks!! Two of the seemed to have laniards which may well have been an exemption from mask wearing - but with clear signs at the entrances saying that masks must be worn. Was very disappointed with the difference in Swansea form our local shops here in Ceredigion.

Remaining shops were better!!

Managed to find myself on the wrong side of a lake and had to walk an additional mile around to get back to the garage just as they were finishing.

Worst part was that the car had to have a full petrol tank for the calibration - it affects the cameras and the weight apparently. But that means that another £65 of diesel is int he tank - which will account for almost 600 miles!! Will have to see if I can siphon some out tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Landie would not start with a dead battery. I am assured that it is a brand new battery and should be fine - so have bought a new battery charger to fix that tomorrow - thinking that the radio was probably draining the battery while it was left for a couple of days int he drive.

But sadly, while walking around Swansea my tablet was dropped and the cover was opened and it seems that the on / off controls have slipped and will not switch on ...
Looks like a trip to Newcastle Emlyn tomorrow to see about repairs...

But, back at the homestead now and life goes on ....

Cheers !

16th January 2022 - And we start on the Workshop

Thought for the day :"Did you know Mr Sheen is Polish?"

Raining this morning . Put to the text the old adage that where is no bad weather - there is only bad clothing , and put my waterproof trousers and top on and headed off across the fields on the Donkey Trail..

And it was sort of right - but the rain stopped as I started up the lane so could not really tell..
But the dogs enjoyed the walk as I did not get out yesterday..

No pallets .. so started a new project - to get the Workshop "sorted"..

There is a lot of stuff in the workshop.. and so we have some "before" pictures...

So this is where we start...

Progress to follow ..

Cheers !
