30th November 2024 - Drizzle

Thought for the day :"Everyone told Sam not to sing - but Samsung anyway"

Wet

Kitchen being put back in place

Saturday, Susie started painting the furniture in the Kitchen and we put most of the "stuff" back in place.

Started the day wiring up the chicken poo compost bins to try to stop 'Thena gorging in the muck. She still wanders off  still and I am sure that she is beginning to go deaf.

Warm enough to work on the building today - in fact the weather forecasters say that the temperatures are nearer to April than November, but there was a steady drizzle so no show.

Spent the afternoon on the computer instead - haven't done that for a long time and watched Spiderman and Spiderman 2 - the ones I have seen before but needing to get through them in order so I get to understand the Marvel Universe version later.

Susie still having stomach problems and not having a good day today.
As they say in Downton Abbey - What is a Weekend?  Seems pretty similar to every other day at the moment.

Cheers !

Winter decision - gather up all the leaves from under the Magnolia this year and plant some grass seeds so we get a lawn back this year.
Bagging up and putting into the chicken run ..

Front of house looking good but too cold and wet today to do any more to it

Pine end

bright and cheerful

27th November 2024 - Car decisions

Thought for the day :"Fellow came in the Tavern tonight covered from head to toe in trifle and crying his eyes out. Think his partner desserted him"

Mainly Sunny - got some work done

For my information - this is a breakdown for what an engine looks like (I don't really see anything when I look under the bonnet) But the Con rod would appear to be the Connecting Rod  which is what Jay and Tom think it is .

Have the offer of recovery and check the engine for £150.
If it needs a new engine then replacement for £600

Too Good not to take.
Car cost us £2,400 when bought. Has gone to Germany and Back twice so does not owe us anything.
Susie like the automatic and loves the car so to put back on the road for another £1,000 is better than anything that we could buy, so going ahead with the plans..

Cheers !

25th November 2024 - How High's the water Mother?

Thought for the day :"I've taken up bellringing every day as a hobby. Bus driver is not very keen."

Wet - very

More water coming down the river...

Called the insurance and notified in case I want to progress through the insurance.

As far as I can see. the company will probably write the car off as being uneconomical to fix. Values of Volvo C70 D5 seem to vary from  £285 from We Buy any car to about £2,500 if buying again on Ebay.
Though I may be able to buy the vehicle back - it looks as though I could get a new engine for a few hundred pounds and could pay someone to drop the new engine in. Dave is convinced that it could be flushed out and restarted but Tom and Jay consider it very unlikely.

Decisions!

Cheers !

24th November 2024 - Car Recovered to Lay-by

Thought for the day :"Painter found dead on a mountain top could have done with another coat "

Wet - stormy - Storm Bert continues

The say after the crisis

Up early and it is still mizzy but car had been abandoned overnight though it had some cones around it and I had put out warning triangles at both ends as warning but wanted it off the bend before the POlice came again and decided that they would call out a recovery.

Went and camped out on the drive for Tom and Jay - and kept my fingers crossed as they rarely answer their phones at the weekend - and luckily after half an hour they rocked up.

I asked if I could borrow the trailer and told them what had happened and they said "no" as they were on the way to Swansea to pick up another car!

After a little discussion (pleading), they agreed to go to Swansea via Newcastle Emlyn and pick the Volvo up and move it to the lay by at the top of the road, which they did.

Not much more I could do the same day so had a quiet day in the house. Well yesterday was a marathon!

Cheers !

23rd November 2024 - Flood and Stupidity

Thought for the day :"I'm so misunderstood that I often can't understand myself"

Rain and floods - and broken car

Can't believe that the week has gone so we looked at the terrible weather and decided to give ourselves at least an hour and a half  extra travel time to get Jan and Iris back to Cardiff Airport in time for their five o'clock flight time.

Decision to not go over the top, so heading along for the Newcastle Emlyn road as it was likely to be more clear than the Pencader road.

Heading down the Adpar hill just before Newcastle Emlyn and found that the culvert was blocked and the water had gathered in the dip ..

Too used to having the four by four I suppose, but decided  to give it a try rather than lose half and hour on our journey with weather getting worse. A Mitsubushi drove through easily and so I gave it a go - foolishly!!   Got half way through and the engine died - we were in two feet of water - just above the door sill though we did not get out straight away.

The Mitsubushi kindly backed up to us with a ratchet strap so I got out and struggled to find any place to attach the strap, having to lie down in the water to reach under. The Volvo towing hook was not in the car so in the end we tagged it onto the wing and told him to pull slowly - as the wing started coming off we stopped. In the end we pushed the car out of the water and onto the dry...

Fingers crossed I hoped that it might start when out of the water - no chance.

Calling Susie to get the Vercta out and come to us so we could continue the journey - sadly I had the Vectra keys in my pocket after swapping the cars first thing!
(Note to self : Always check and leave other keys at home)

Of course that meat that the Landie was also blocked in

Enter Sarah to the rescue - she drove her bog charger up to the waters edge ad the Mitsibushi drove Jan and Iris and their cases and coats back through the water - I was so wet that I just waded through.
Council turned up about then.

A Jan's eye view of the disaster
(He is a worrier at the best of times)

Decisions - did not have enough time to return to Rhydlewis to collect the Vectra so Sarah, being the star that she is, drove us all to Cardiff - me dripping on the front seat.

Briton Ferry Bridge closed for high winds!!
All traffic off at Briton Ferry and rejoined at Baglan - add 40 minutes to journey !!

So got there with 2 minutes to spare for the recommended time of arrival 4pm and as there are only four planes a day in Cardiff at the moment - they were through security by 4.20pm and caught their Flights to Hannover.

Not been a good record for their return trips.
2023 - Missed Bristol due to traffic and had to go to Heathrow for overnight stay and buy new tickets.
2024 May - Caught Cardiff plane ion good time - delayed flight meant missed connection in Holland and had to have overnight stay
2024 November - delayed journey but caught flight s and got home safely on time

As Jan says - three time it become a tradition - not a tradition that we want.

Waited around for the RAC as the Police did not want to leave the car ion the bend where it was .
Went to meet them at 10pm and after an hour was told it could be all night and that they were sending a technician not a recovery - so it could be later again .
Then, when I said that it would need a recovery due to the water damage - the RAC lass said that if I had gone into water then it was not covered and would be charged - for the technician and for the recovery so I decided to leave it there and go home to bed. It had been a long day !

Thanks again to Sarah for actions well above and beyond duty!

Cheers !

22nd November 2024 - Narberth day trip

Thought for the day :"Apparently Luke Skywalker's stupid father was Daft Vader."

Dry - rather nice actually

Took advantage of the weather being the best for the week and road tripped down to Narberth for a stroll around the shops and the antique places, and a nice lunch in the Angel thanks to a nice discount through Erin working there. Erin joined us and Jan treated us all to Lunch while I saw to the drinks.

Festive Greetings!

Cheers

21st November 2024 - Jan's Birthday Celebrations

Thought for the day :"If you want to know who will take the second shot in snooker, find out after the break"

Rain

Was Jan's Birthday today so decision to take a trip to Llangrannog and have a Pint at the Pentre.
As Jan pointed out - we had had a Guiness at the Pentre each time for three years - which makes it a tradition!!

Walked along the beach dodging the rain.

Jan on the phone to Macpiet making him jealous that he was not here

Happy 50th Jan !

Cheers !
